Gifts.com bills itself as the Internet's only gift-suggestion service. Gifts.com is a pay for performance service, staying out of the e-commerce game and competing with Froogle/AdWords, A9/Amazon, and MSN AdCenter.
Local merchants and brand manufacturers sign up for the service, coding products with metatag information such as occasions, personality, and other categories. Gifts.com editors review the various items to determine which should be featured at any given time.
Gifts.com is the first company to be started and not purchased by IAC, a conglomerate owned by media guru Barry Diller. Gifts.com fills the shopping void in IAC's portfolio. IAC had previously purchased ModaCAD and rechristened it StyleClick. ModaCAD's founder Maurizio Vecchione had invented a technology that enabled viewers to see how a fabric pattern would lay over various 3D surfaces.
